چکیده

Oral treatment with the 12 adrenoceptor stimulating agent terbutaline produces bronchodilatation and relieves clinical symptoms in bronchial asthma (Legge et al., 1971; Formgren, 1975). Since bronchodilating therapy might be necessary during the lactation period, there is an obvious need for data on the excretion of terbutaline into breast milk and the plasma levels reached in nursing infants. No such information seems to be available at present (Wilson etal., 1980). Breast milk and blood were collected from two nursing mothers suffering from chronic bronchial asthma, after informed consent. They were treated with oral terbutaline (BricanyA AB Draco, Lund, Sweden), 5 mg three times daily, which is the dose recommended by the manufacturer. Inhaled ,8adrenoceptor agonists were withheld during the test day. In one case blood samples were also drawn from the nursing infant. Terbutaline concentrations in plasma and milk were determined in duplicate. Two ml samples of plasma and milk were extracted and derivatized according to the method of Jacobsson et al. (1980). Standardized cow milk (1% fat) was used for the

Excretion of Acebutolol and its Major Metabolite Diacetolol into Infant Blood Circulation and the Breast Milk

Acebutolol (AC) is a chiral b-adrenergic blocking drug, which is useful clinically as the racemate in treating hypertension and is metabolized to an equipotent chiral metabolite, diacetolol (DC). In this paper we report a case of a 32 year old woman who was receiving AC during her pregnancy and lactating time for management of hypertension. The maternal plasma level and breast milk as well as c...

Breast feeding and anaesthesia.

Anaesthetists require a good knowledge of the excretion of drugs in breast milk and the potential hazards to suckling infants of drug ingestion via breast milk. A brief account of the physiology of lactation is given. The mechanisms of drug passage into breast milk are discussed followed by a review of the excretion in breast milk of drugs used in anaesthetic practice. Suggestions for the manag...

Management of hypertension during lactation.

There has been a dramatic increase in the number of women breast-feeding during the last decade. Since little is known about the excretion of antihypertensive drugs into human breast milk, the management of hypertension during lactation can be problematical. To enable the clinician to better advise the hypertensive, lactating mother, the published literature on the excretion of antihypertensive...

Breast milk excretion of radiopharmaceuticals: mechanisms, findings, and radiation dosimetry.

The excretion of radiopharmaceuticals in breast milk is studied to understand excretion mechanisms and to determine recommended breast feeding interruption times for many compounds based on the radiation absorbed dose estimated. A literature review is summarized, providing information on breast milk excretion of many radiopharmaceuticals, including the observed fractions of administered activit...
